Looking for a unique Hawaii experience? The Byodo-In Temple is a great family-friendly, and less touristy, place to visit on Oahu, Hawaii.
Planning Your Visit
The temple is located in the Valley Of Temples Memorial Park in Kaneohe, Hawaii. After a serene drive through memorial park, you will find signs to the temple. Free parking is available, and there is a small admission fee to enter ($5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for children ages 2-12).
The History
The Byodo-In Temple is a non-denominational Buddhist temple located in Kaneohe. The temple is a replica of the historic Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Japan. It was dedicated on June 7, 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.
The Byodo-In Temple covers 11,000 sq ft and is set in front of the stunning Ko'olau Mountain Range. Outside of the temple is a three-ton, brass peace bell (Bon-sho), and surrounding the temple are large koi ponds covering a total of 2 acres.
The Byodo-In Temple Experience
After crossing over the bridge, before entering the temple, it is customary to ring the Bon-sho, or sacred bell, before continuing your visit. Ringing the bell will purify the mind of temptation and evil spirits and spread the eternal teachings of Buddah. Ringing the bell will also bring you blessings, happiness, and a long life.
Inside of the temple is an 18 ft statue of the Lotus Buddha, Amida. Upon entering the temple, shoes must be removed, and incense sticks are available to light and worship or meditate in front of the Lotus Buddha.
Outside of the temple, take a walk around the gardens and be sure to visit the koi ponds. Fish food is available to purchase from the small gift shop; I highly recommend getting a small bag. It was fascinating to watch all of the koi fish come swimming over as soon as someone walked close to the pond. Our kids loved watching the fish hop around in the water while eating.
The Temple grounds are so serene and peaceful. The structural art and luscious landscaping, as well as the mountain range backdrop, make the temple a beautiful place to visit. Add this to your list of unique places to visit on Oahu, Hawaii. You will not be disappointed!
