Maunawilli Falls Trail is a 2.8-mile trail with 1,007 ft elevation gain and a fun waterfall and swimming hole at the end. The trail offers excellent views of Kailua and contours the base of the Ko'olau Mountain Range on the windward side. Maunawili Falls is one of Oahu's more accessible waterfall trails.
Getting There
The trail begins in a quiet neighborhood and leads up a hill to the trailhead. Street parking is available in the neighborhood; please be respectful of residents and park appropriately.
Our Hiking Adventure
The trail begins along a road and veers off to the right when you reach a "waterfall trail enter here" sign with an arrow. With a progressive climb upward, we hiked across large tree roots, rock boulders, and occasional muddy terrain.
We crossed over several streams and climbed up and down about 200 yards of stairs before reaching the falls. As if nature's playground was not enough, about midway through the trail, we stumbled upon a man-made tree swing! It was the perfect spot to take a break and swing across the rain forest and over a small stream. Our kids had a blast running through the jungle terrains and hopping in the refreshing water at the end!
The falls were refreshingly cold, and we all enjoyed swimming, rock jumping, and taking in the beautiful scenery. This hike is a little longer, so prepare for a few hours of hiking, especially if you plan to play at the falls! The Maunawili Falls Trail is a waterfall oasis playground, and it is a family-favorite hike!
